The Escape Act - A Holocaust Memoir is based on the true story of Irene Danner-Storm, a Jewish acrobat who survived the Holocaust hiding and performing at a German circus. It is a touring, one-woman theater show incorporating elements of circus and puppetry.
The show goes back and forth between past and present, between character and performer, and threads the events of Irene's life with the performer's experiences as a grandchild of Holocaust survivors. As the performer travels through Irene's story it triggers her memories of family history, of struggles, inherited traumas and their domino effects. The past looms closer and closer to her and she is forced to invite it in.

The Escape Act is more than just a show. It is an academic, artistic and educational project on Circus Jews Under National Socialism, based on over six years of intensive research spanning survivor testimonies, family interviews, archival digging and visits to museums, libraries and cemeteries.
This research has been transformed into a 3-part project: The Escape Act show, the exhibition, and educational opportunities. The show can be booked by itself, or in a package with any of the project's complementary elements.
